How to Write Your Own Therapy Website

Copywriting advice tends to be based on these (supposedly universal) marketing ideas:

  • “In order to motivate customers, you have to push their pain points.”

Frankly, I think they’re wrong.


Here’s what most marketing and copywriting experts don’t understand:

Therapy is different.

We’re not trying to manipulate someone into making a one-time purchase, or focusing on building brand loyalty over time. We are inviting clients into a healing relationship, on their terms and at their pace.

It’s not artificial urgency that persuades someone to schedule their first visit with you. Instead, it’s their own felt sense of being seen and understood. When just reading your website brings relief and a glimmer of hope, that’s what leads them to reach out.

Your therapist website can acknowledge a client’s pain, give them a sense of how their pain will be eased through building a therapeutic relationship with you, and trust them to take the next step when they are ready.


But how exactly do you convey all this with words on your website?

Maybe you know what message you’re trying to get across but feel uncertain about the tone or “voice” of your writing. Or maybe you’re just not at all sure of what to say — overwhelmed by the task of showing who you are and how you’re different from other therapists in your area.
